[edit] History of PROJECT LIFT

In the past decade, Raleigh has become known as a great place to live, work and play in the United States. Most recently, the population was estimated at just under 390,000– an increase in over 112,000 people since the last census count in 2000 . Such rapid population growth has placed a significant strain on the city’s ability to meet the needs of its residents. In the past, the nonprofit community has done a good job of supporting the most vulnerable segments of our population – those who are living in poverty, in poor health, are unemployed or mentally ill. However, the slowing economy has adversely affected many of the agencies our residents rely on for services, resulting in reduced operating budgets, decreased services and staff layoffs while the need for such services has increased as more citizens find themselves in trouble.

Despite these challenges, the City of Raleigh is committed to helping our community-based and faith-based organizations succeed and flourish. Project LIFT will help nonprofit leaders create sustainable programs and strong community partnerships through a series of educational and networking events in 2010. These opportunities will help nonprofit leaders learn skills related to the following areas:

It is our hope that Project LIFT will create sustainable organizations, programs and partnerships that will enable the City and the nonprofit community to increase their level of service to Raleigh’s under-served populations to make our city an even better place to live, work and play. Simply put, LET’S IMPACT OUR FUTURE TOGETHER.
